Hello: many thanks for organizing us and for the Coatlique photo which I had lost from my old telephone 3 years ago! Impecabbly good taste, I say there....given the Brits role in "rescuing" the "ruins" (humph, unpack this one), thanks to you y Alma; mil gracias por su trabajo y por avanzando nuestro archivo y la historia, documentada para que no digan que otro inglese te descubrio, Alma, 500 anos adelantados. ¿Porqué Codex? ¿Porqué Nepantla? Why Codex? Why Nepantla?

En la tradición de los códices creados después de la conquista, el Codex Nepantla es una crónica hecha de palabras e imágenes. Los códices Aztecas originales (la mayoría de ellos destruidos por los invasores) eran compuestos únicamente de imágenes, los que han sobrevivido como el Códice Florentino o el Códice Borgia, fueron creados después de la conquista, e incluían imágenes tanto como palabras, escritas primero en nahuatl y traducidas al español. Se puede decir que estos fueron los primeros textos mestizos ya que mezclaban idiomas y epistemologías. Siguiendo esa tradición, el Codex Nepantla forma una puente entre el español y el inglés, la imagen y la palabra, lo virtual y lo histórico, el primer mundo y el tercero, México y los Estados Unidos, las Chicanas/Latinas y las Mexicanas, la academia y la comunidad. Es una crónica de el trabajo teórico/político escrito por Chicanas/Latinas feministas y Chicanas/Latinas lesbianas traducido a un idioma diferente a su original (ya que el inglés fue impuesto sobre nuestras lenguas mexicanas después de nuestra conquista norteña por parte de los Anglo Sajones). Los conceptos también han sido capturados en forma plástica/artística, para comunicar otro modo de entendimiento. Aquí les ofrecemos a nuestras compañeras mexicanas un Codex de mestizas del siglo XXI, un relato de las diferentes maneras en que las Chicanas/Latinas hemos manejado nuestra vida en Nepantla, en ese espacio entremedio que algunos le llaman el margen pero que nosotras conocemos como el centro, la encrucijada, el umbral entre mundos. Con el nombre Nepantla, también le hacemos homenaje a una de nuestras primeras guerrilleras lesbofeministas, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, quien nació en el pueblito del mismo nombre, situado al pie de los volcanes. Ella que se llamó "la peor de todas" las monjas y las mujeres epitoma una vida de resistencia en contra de los "hombres necios" y una carrera de lucha por la auto-realizacion de su mente, su alma, y su cuerpo.

In the tradition of the post-conquest Aztec codices, the Codex Nepantla is a chronicle created in words and images. The original Aztec codices (most of which were destroyed by the invaders) were created only in images, the surviving codices such as the Codex Florentino or Codex Borgia, were created after la conquista, and they included images and words, written in Nahuatl first, then translated into Spanish. It can be said, then, that these were the first mestizo texts inasmuch as they bridged languages as well as epistemologies. In that tradition, the Codex Nepantla bridges Spanish and English, the image and the written word, the virtual and the historical, the First World and the Third, Mexico and the U.S., Chicanas and Mexicanas, academy and community. It chronicles the political/theoretical work written by Chicana/Latina feminists and Chicana/Latina lesbians translated into a language different from its original (English having been imposed on our Mexican tongues after our own conquest by the Anglos in the Mexican north). The concepts are rendered as well in artistic form, to speak to a visual mode of engagement. We offer to our Mexican compañeras a 21st-century mestiza Codex, a story about the different ways Chicanas/Latinas manage life in Nepantla, in that in-between place that some call the margins but that we know as the middle, the crossroads, the threshold of our two worlds. With the name Nepantla, we also honor one of our early lesbian feminist warriors, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, whose birthplace was the town of the same name, located at the foot of the volcanoes. She who called herself "la peor de todas," the worst of all nuns and women, epitomized a life of resistance to "hombres necios" and a career of struggle for self-determination of her mind, soul, and body.
